Wednesday

I like Sushi! Who would have thought? It's never been something that I was too thrilled with, but while I am in Asia, I figured that I should try real sushi. So, tonight I was really daring and went to a sushi cart and picked a few different types to try. I got one that had corn on top, and it turns out that it was the rice rolled in seaweed only topped with corn. I also got one that had shrimp on top, another one had orange fish eggs covering the top of it, and the one that I'm most proud of grabbing is the one that had either squid or octopus on top of it. I'm not quite sure what that one was, but it definitely had cut up, curly tentacles on it. Then I also got this other thing that was just rice stuffed in a bread type thing (I'm guessing) that was soaked in some type of sauce. I was super nervous to sit down and eat it, but I was very pleasantly surprised. So, go me! I'm daring and it worked out this time.

So, now that I've started find the end, let's start at the beginning. Kaylene's arches were hurting her, so it was just Nancy and I on the run today. We decided to try some place new this morning for breakfast, so we pulled off at a little place where Nancy always noticed that there were alto of people always coming in and out. Nancy's got a good eye, it was a good place. They had a little bit of everything, but we decided to get breakfast dumplings (they have different fillings then regular dumplings, but I couldn't tell you what it is) and we tried a pastry that was rolled up and it looked like it had jam or something wrapped up in it- it didn't, well, it could have, but it was a tiny layer and you couldn't even taste it, so it was a waste.

The five year olds when on a field trip today to go see the school that they'll be going to in the fall. The field trip went from 9:30-11:30, so I didn't have to teach them in the morning (I got a 20 minute break), but they got back right in time so I did have to teach them during the second class (Nancy didn't have to teach them, so she got the 20 minute break this morning, and a 30 minute break during the second class. Class was kind of hectic today, I don't know what it was, but during the last class, I caught myself almost snapping at the kids. But I did catch myself, I hadn't noticed how annoyed I was until the end of the day.

At school today, for lunch, we just had rice, with tofu (which I'm really liking the way they prepare it, weird), pork (the ground pork that looks like hamburger but isn't), vegetables, and seaweed. It was good, the only new thing was the seaweed. I think that I prefer the seaweed dried, like when it's wrapped around rice crackers, but it wasn't all that great in the rice. During our lunch break, I finished getting ready for my afternoon class (preparing the paper for the craft) and then Nancy and I went to look at the other Taoist temple in town. In this one, we could go upstairs to see the other room up there, and we could look out at the view. Again, Nancy and I don't have great ties to this building, so our trip wasn't very long.

After school, I had my first private tutor session with one of the four year olds from the preschool. Kristy is super cute. She's not shy when it comes to showing affection, she always runs up and gives me a hug and she always has the biggest smile on her face, but she is definitely shy when it comes to talking, and especially talking English, so it was a little bit of a struggle to get her to talk to me today, but the session was only 20 minutes, because school ends at 4:30 and my group tutoring starts at 5:00. But Kristy will be back on Friday for another 20 minutes, and it's good that it's not that long. It would probably be better to have 30 minutes, but it wouldn't happen so we'll go with what we've got. My group tutor session went okay today, but I felt bad because the kids might have been able to tell that I was bored. I'll make it up to them next time, when I'll try to make the phonics books less repetitive and dull.

Yeah, so when the group left at 6:30, I headed out to dinner with Luke and Kaylene, and we already know what happened there. And after dinner I got online and took care of some financial business and cut open that way expensive mango I bought at the bigger night market that I went to last night. I was excited because it was a new mango, but it had less taste then the small mangoes. It still tasted okay, but I've definitely had better.

BTW...you & mom both. It's "yay" when you're excited about something & "yeah" when you're agreeing with something. Don't worry, I can teach, too. Anyhoo...I enjoy sushi on occasion. Uni (sea urchin) is something that you'll have to try at some point. And I always recommend getting rolls rather than just plain sashimi. I've tried to be open-minded whenever we go out. Love ya!

the little orange fish eggs are flying fish eggs. I like 'em because they 'pop' when you bite 'em.

Hey Babs... I don’t know if you have very much spare time, but if you can travel 30 minutes by car, I’d like to suggest a trip to Taroko Park.

If you take the Shakadang Trail, which you will no doubt run, you can see 4.5 k of awesome scenery. Also, the web page says that this month the tung trees are in bloom.

Just thought you’d like to know.
